The dictionary defines art as "the production or expression of what is beautiful, appealing or of more than ordinary significance."
O.K. That is definitely one version of art. Now let me explain how I define art.
Art is an opportunity. Maybe it is an opportunity to play out a line and see what comes of it. Maybe it is an opportunity to refine colors until they dance on canvas or create a composition that compels the viewer to look. Maybe art is an opportunity to take the abstract of emotions, of humor, of thoughts and make them concrete. Most definitely, though art, or perhaps the creation of art, is an opportunity to think. And if it is good art, it will make you think too.
I am primarily a figure painter and usually women are my subjects. As a woman I am often at odds with the images of women perpetuated in our society. I resent the narrow definition of beauty imposed on women; our beautiful daughters, our beautiful selves cannot appreciate our own beauty because of the penury of this description.
The women I paint do not apologize. Not for their looks, not for what they feel nor who they are. And if for a moment, you, my viewer, have to take a minute and think about what you are looking at, not necessarily agree with nor like it, then I have succeeded. I have succeeded in creating some very fine art.
